Story of a Gulmit Guy

I belong to an uneducated family. My eldest brother was only matric passed. But my younger brother is more educated because I managed to set a better example for him. I went to Karachi for further studies as it was an inexpensive city to live in. I took admission in the Federal Urdu University; it was only a college at that time. Due to some financial issues, I couldn’t manage to attend regular classes. So, I did different jobs at many places to finance my education. Firstly, I did a job at a Tobacco company with a wage of only Rs. 20/day. After that, I did a job at the Avari hotel for Rs. 800 a month as a waiter to support my education and living. After my bachelor’s, my love for my homeland and my passion for serving my people brought me back to Gulmit. I started teaching at a nearby school. It had always been my dream to be a teacher and to play my part in educating the next generations. Through that school, I got a fully-funded scholarship at Agha khan University for M.Ed.
While most of my friends preferred to go out of the city for a better job, I chose to stay in my village and teach children so that they do not have to walk in my shoes of hardships and trouble. Love and respect, which I get from my people, is much more to me than money. I keep humanity dearer than monetary gains. When I see my students succeed and achieve something, those are my happy moments. So I chose to teach, and I think choosing the best profession.
