Shahid Afridi Biography :

  1. Sahibzada Mohammad Shahid Khan Afridi, commonly known as Shahid Afridi, is a former Pakistani cricketer and ex-captain of the Pakistan national cricket team. He currently holds the position of interim chief selector for the Pakistan cricket team.
  2. Afridi was renowned as an all-rounder, excelling as a right-handed leg spinner and batsman throughout his career.
  3. In his autobiography titled “Game Changer” (2019), Afridi initially stated his birth year as 1975, which was later corrected to 1977, dispelling earlier reports suggesting he was born in 1980 in the Khyber Agency, Pakistan, to the Afridi tribe of Pashtuns.
  4. Afridi’s cricket journey began with impressive performances in the under-19 championship circuit during the 1994–95 season. Playing for Karachi Whites, he played a pivotal role in their title win in the subsequent season, claiming 42 wickets in five matches at an outstanding average of 9.59. He also showcased his talent against visiting teams and in first-class games for Karachi Whites in the senior National Championship.
  5. Afridi made his One Day International (ODI) debut in 1996 against Kenya, where he immediately made headlines by breaking the record for the fastest century in ODI cricket in his second match against Sri Lanka, achieving the feat in just 37 deliveries.
  6. He later debuted in Test cricket against Australia in 1998 and in T20 Internationals (T20Is) against England in 2006. Afridi’s remarkable performances earned him the Player of the Tournament title in the 2007 T20 World Cup.
  7. A defining moment in Afridi’s career came in the final of the 2009 T20 World Cup, where he was awarded the Player of the Match for his crucial contribution with both bat and ball, helping Pakistan secure victory.
  8. Following Pakistan’s triumph at the 2009 World Cup, Afridi was appointed as the new captain for T20Is after Younis Khan’s retirement. He later served as Pakistan’s ODI captain from 2010, also briefly holding the position of Test captain before retiring from the format after a single match.
  9. Under Afridi’s leadership, Pakistan reached the semi-finals of the 2011 Cricket World Cup, ultimately losing to India. However, he was relieved of his duties as ODI captain in 2011.
  10. Afridi bid farewell to ODI cricket in 2015 and stepped down as captain after Pakistan’s early exit from the 2016 T20 World Cup. He subsequently announced his retirement from international cricket in February 2017.
  11. In the 2016 Pakistan Super League (PSL), Afridi captained the franchise Peshawar Zalmi and served as their icon player. Following the conclusion of the first season, he was appointed as the president of Peshawar Zalmi.
